Choosing billiard balls
Choosing the best set of balls for you will greatly depend upon what type of player you are (a
recreational player would be hard pressed to notice the difference between a 4 1/2oz ball and a 5
1/2oz ball). A quality set of billiard balls is a lasting investment that should provide many years of
flawless play. Although one need not spend a small fortune on a set of balls to enjoy the game, it
is important to understand that choosing a cheaply made set of balls can not only affect play, but
can actually have a damaging affect on your table and will end up costing you more money in the
long run.
Construction Material: Many years ago, pool balls were made of solid ivory. As far back as 1866, elephants were
being slaughtered at an alarming rate just to keep up with demand. One of the first developments of plastics was as
a renewable and much less costly replacement for ivory billiard balls. For about the last 30 years or so, pool balls
have been made of cast resins or polymer plastics. Higher quality balls are made from Phenolic or Partek resins.
On a break, a cue-ball can accelerate from 0 to 30mph in a fraction of a second. The friction heat between the sliding
ball and the table cloth can reach 450 degrees! Not only can this type of heat create "burn spots" on cheaply made
balls, but it will also wear down the cloth at a much faster rate. Resin balls can withstand this heat and maintain their
luster and smoothness for a much longer period of time. This results in less table wear.
Thanks to the advancements in materials and manufacturing, the billiard player is no longer stuck with the standard
stripes and solids. Some manufacturers such as EPCO's line of professional balls will allow you to add an artistic
look to your table with clear ball sets, marbleized ball sets, sparkle ball sets, and even glow in the dark ball sets.
EPCO can even custom design balls with your favorite team's logo or even your company logo! Thanks to offerings
like these, the home billiard room now has a variety of ball sets for various occasions.
